Someone asked why did I feel the need to mention First Morning, after watching Saving Face?

I think the title of the Chinese movie spoke volume. It clearly told me the main issue being addressed: Pride--to be exact, delusional self-serving "gratification", the kind of pride only “that” person cares about, while ruining the lives of others, or causing others a lot of pain and agony, trying to preserve such “pride”.

Both of the films, First Morning and Saving Face, decided to “overcome”, discard, and revolt against these “traditional thinking, belief, values or ways of life”, handed down to us from the “older” generations. Hence, the title First Morning: meaning there’s a new beginning.

That’s the common factor between the two films. Both are about our struggle to assimilate into the new society while trying to keep our own identity and heritage—be it the pressure from our elderly or just self consciousness.

Making it “more real”, Saving Face engaged me more, and convinced me to be more involved with the issues they brought up in the film.

As the result, I think they’d achieved their goal: Entertained the audience while engaging as well as educating the viewers about those sensitive issues that were delicately, and cleverly, presented in Saving Face.

Did you feel their “passions”? Do you agree or sympathize with their resolutions?

...

You're right. I'm "over killing" this "topic". Tongue

But I was planning to write a "mini book" about the film, not as a review--but using it as an example/scapegoat/study case to further my "agenda".

Nothing much. I was thinking of expanding each post above into separate topic in VYF. Question

Did you see the movie Pope John Paul The II, last night, on CBS (They'll show part two on Wednesday night.)? I'm glad I stayed home and watched it. Another pleasant surprise. Approve

I'd like to include that movie into our discussion/review as well. There're a lot of stuff in there that I've been dying to talk about, but without the "eloquence" or concise (executions) that film so powerfully/successfully presented/demonstrated.

Care to join us? http://vietyouth.net/Forums/viewtopic.php?t=1890

I'd like to approach the discussions "intensely"/extensively without all the (unnecessary) greeting, "chit-chatting", back-patting or personal-attacking... Kinda "cold"; but I prefer it that way. Question

Thanks for reading.

Hi ABC,
:)
Thanks for reading my posts, again. It took me two weeks to write those, so take your time.

Just in case.

Hello HJI & K,
:-D
Theo như ABC nói, cũng như DEF và ý kiến của những netters khác, phim Oan Hồn cũng không hay gì cho lắm (Tui chưa xem nên chửa dám có ý kiến.). This guy needs to work on his soundtrack/editing skill. Anyway, can I safely say that he's not our "answer"/hope?

Seriously, tell me what's wrong with my writing. I did get a "review"/revsision in TTVNOL, a Vietnamese website. How ironic, eh? :-D

Thanks.

Thank you for stopping by or sharing your view.

I'm not really interested in finding new friend or membership, but I would like it very much if any of you would join my discussion, though.

Anyone saw the CBS's movie, Pope John Paul II, last night?

Hi VY
If you love to cast your opinion and love to write, maybe you'll find interest in this website, and I think they're looking for more stories, but too bad it's unpaid www.vietvoicemag.com. Enjoy.

quote:

That's something about the American media. They either don't have anything worth to talk about, or they'd ramble on about something 24x7 until you are sick of it.

I also have a strong opinion about the American media. With all the pundits, experts, reporters, correspondents (each a supposed scholar), all the satellites, news vans, radio and TV stations, we'd expect to have ten of thousands of news stories a day. But as I’ve been watching the news 24/7 for years, it seems like all the news broadcasting stations were just regurgitating from one source—maybe the New York Time?

quote:
I saw this document about a man living alone in the wilderness (Alone in the Wilderness). It's story about this man Dick Proenneke, how he lived his life in in the middle of nowhere in Alaska.

You know, sometimes I wonder why they keep making movies about me: The 40-year old virgin, and now--that? Tongue

quote:
Talk about 2 lesbians making out... uhmmm... isn't that every man's fantasy.

This brings back my point about the pirate scene. It may not be "every guy's" fantasy to see such a scene, but just as in Saving Face, it was necessary for the movie. I think it's one of those “pivotal” moments where there can't be any other substitution.

Footnote: I did mention to our girlfriends regarding us guys' fantasy about the girl-on-girl scenario. However, I think that's more of a myth. We don't mind watching such scene on the screen, but that doesn't necessarily mean we "fantasize" about it (all the times). Question

quote:
I guess I'm bias.. I'm not very impressed. Or... perhaps I'm not very impressed by any Phim Tàu for their huge population vs. Hollywood's.

About Chinese movies/directors/actors invading Hollywood (or HK soap operas dominated our homes), you brought me back five years ago, when in a moment of "rage"/exuberance, I almost declared a promise to another member of VYF, sis Phương Nam, aka Phù Thủy, that I’ll… Well, a promise cannot keep is better not said. I’ll revisit it when the time comes.

I heard good things about the film "the silent of the bride".
